Have you ever dreamt of being on television or radio? Or are you an individual or an organization who has a desire to create a platform to inspire change?
With the onset of digital platforms in recent years, podcasting has grown at an alarming rate. It is an excellent entry into the world of broadcasting in which you have complete control over your content. If you are passionate about transformation, have an intense yearning to help others, and you touch the lives of people you come in contact with then podcasting could be the platform for you.
Have you ever wondered what characteristics you need to become a good podcast host? To help you decide if this is the right path for you; I have compiled a list of some of the skills and attributes that will help you on your podcasting journey.
The best advice that I can give you is to be you. Be Authentic, be real and be vulnerable – these are all attributes that make you relatable and will engage and build trust with your audience. Don’t try to be anyone else, and put on a persona, respect your audience because they will see through you.
By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail. Respect your guest and audience and prepare adequately for your podcast. Ask the guest to send you a bio and references to their work. Research the subject matter of the guest. Check out other interviews of individuals in the same field who have been interviewed for possible ideas and questions. Please do your homework, or you will look shoddy.
You improve your interviewing skills by becoming a better listener.
Allow the conversation to flow; the best way to do this is to be engaged and listen attentively. If you are thinking about what your next question is going to be, you are not present, and it shows not only to the guest but also the audience.
Leave all your stresses, anxieties and worries outside of the interview if you are overwhelmed, it will impair your ability to listen effectively.
Talk to your audience
Speak to your audience; imagine they are in the room with you when you are interviewing. Talk about them as though they are the third person.
The ability to write good copy and esp killer headlines is essential if you would like your podcast to stand out. Hook your audience in with a dramatic headline that entices them but does not give too much away. The ability to ask the right questions and to get your guest to reveal something they do not usually tell will help you write engaging headlines.
